Kat did her chores, and the brisk morning air woke her up. Despite the horror of last night’s discovery and having slept only a few hours, she felt great. Her heart had warmed when Vi showed up for companionship. Most of the time Kat enjoyed her solitude. In theory, she didn’t have anything against relationships and had had her share of girlfriends through the years. In practice, it was a different story. The last four or five years, she’d been content with her status as a single woman. She couldn’t even remember the last time she’d been on a date or even wanted to.

Given all the work her farm required, she didn’t have much time to sit around and think. Throw in her search-and-rescue work, along with the phenomenal amount of training hours required to keep their skills sharp, and she had little time left for a serious involvement. Happy and busy, she didn’t notice the loneliness the vast majority of the time. That’s what she told herself right now as she watched Vi disappear down the driveway.

Too bad it was all a crock. Nothing like hanging out on a quiet night with a smart, beautiful woman and a roaring to fire to bring home the lie. She felt content, and that much was true. Happy? That was a lot more complicated. If pressed right now she’d have to admit that bliss wasn’t exactly the state of her existence. Over the last few years she’d realized that contentment became an easy place to exist, and it was equally easy to rationalize it as being enough.

Yet it had taken one woman from thousands of miles away walking into her life, making her dormant emotions perk up, and impressing her dog, and bam! The game had just changed and blown her comfortable state of denial to hell.

Saved by the bell. In the kitchen, the ring of her cell had her trotting down the hallway. Right where she’d left it on the counter plugged into the charger, her phone vibrated on the marble as it played the popular song she’d downloaded for her ringtone. The display showed it was Circe. “Hey. More bombshells to drop?”

Circe’s chuckle on the other end was soft. “No. I think we’ve all had enough of those for a very long time.”

Kat thought about what had been revealed last night. For her it went far beyond the mere fact of a familial relationship between one of her close friends and her new tenant. That was freaky enough all by itself and, frankly, odd-defying in a way that made her want to go to the casino to place a big bet. The fact that she’d been working side by side with Circe as a human-remains-detection teammate for years without knowing that she possessed psychic abilities made her question everything she knew about everybody.

Circe, Zelda, Lucy, and Kat had traveled hundreds of miles together, slept in hotel rooms together, trained, and tested together. That she could be oblivious to something that huge shook her confidence.
